“The Chicago Manual of Style”
The University of Chicago Press claims on The Chicago Manual of Style (16th Edition) that it is “the essential guide for writers, editors and publishers.” The book does exactly what it claims by actually giving basic but concise definitions and explanations for writers, editors and publishers to consult. The Chicago Manual of Style is a marvelous source as a dictionary and basic encyclopedia for writers, editors and publishers should look at. From what I skimmed through the book, it is not the holy grail that will solve everything. Given enough time, anyone can check the resources that The Chicago Manual of Style point towards and get the full information they need as a writer, editor or book publisher.
“Novel Writing Basics”
Just like what the title of the artifact is called, it does exactly that. It explains the basics of novel writing. In fact it explains the bare basics for fresh novelists and a recap for seasoned ones. This artifacts explains two key foundations for “Writing Style” and “Tension”, both of these that came from my own experiences and research. While this artifact may not be the best, it was something I produced out of my own hands.
“Essential Questions”
Essential Questions answers the key question that book publishers look for in a novel and also identifies what are some key points that make novels successful. These questions that have been shown are good demonstrators what book publishers are looking for and are ideal as a guide. With these identified questions, the reader can use it as what they must accomplish in their novels. For myself, this is a reminder what I must have inside my novel to be successful and get people to read my works.
“Designing a Novel”
For novelist, there is nothing harder than designing it or so that artifacts claims. The artifact proclaims that having a design process for the novel is key to success. This is one bold statement that is untrue. There are plenty of novels out there that make this rule incorrect. While this statement is untrue, I from my experience as novelist and the one to publish this artifact know that I make the most progress in terms of reducing the time spent and maximizing what I get out of my time.
“Character Chart”
Character Chart is basically layout for brainstorming for character physical and mental aspects, and basic way for the character’s backstory and personality to be fleshed out. This list is effectively a good way for anyone to start. It has pointers for people to begin and reminders where the novelist should do before beginning their novel. As a novelist, this is really simple and clear cut for solving character creation. I know this because I have tried and created many characters using this method.
“Book Synopsis”
The guide to “Book Synopsis” Writing, it explains step by step what needs to be done. As a guide it does okay job because it does give advise to novelist where not to do and pointers where to improve. It lacks more explanation where someone would ask for proof or example to if it does or does not work. Since I wrote this, I unsure where this guide needs further improvement as I have only researched what other novelist have done for this stage. I have not reached the point to where I have used my own guide nor have I tested it out if it works or fails at its job.
“First Draft”
First Draft is self-explanatory. It does what it’s titled as and describes the ins and outs of a first draft. Going step by step about the prodecure and important of the first draft, it tries to explain to novelist to put away their fears of “correctness” and focus more on getting the story down before they worry about the language of the novel. I have so what used this procedure on my own for my currently done part of my novel. I could improve more on this part of the guide by gaining more experience and added more of my experiences and analysis.
“Book Manuscript”
Book Manuscript is dull and very bare . While it lacks detail, it gets the job done with its precise and accurate explanation of what book publishers expect and the taboos to avoid. As a guide this is a horrible one. It lacks the detail the makes reasonably. The preciseness of the guide is not at the stage where it makes up for “quantity over quality” as the quality itself is rather sub-par. I could work on this immensely when I get the experience
